Police were alerted around 3pm Wednesday to Bangårdsgatan in central Vetlanda. Callers said that several people had been attacked with an ax. When the SVT team arrives at the site, various parts of downtown are cordoned off.
According to the SOS Alarm, eight people have been taken by ambulance to the hospital.
– Probably one or several of them will be seriously injured, but I don’t know what it will look like with the rest, says police spokesman Thomas Agnevik.
Crime classification changed
The alleged perpetrator, a man in his 20s, was shot by police in connection with the arrest, says police spokeswoman Angelica Israelsson Silfver.

The incident was first investigated as an alleged attempted murder, but later in the evening the criminal classification was changed to an alleged terrorist offense.
Guarded in the hospital
The gunshot-wounded suspect is being monitored by the police at the hospital where he is being treated.
– His injury situation is unclear, but he is in the hospital and was alive when he got there, says Agnevik.
Several areas of the city center were cordoned off during the police operation, including the area around the train station. Train traffic through Vetlanda was also initially stopped, but has resumed on a limited basis.
Special investigation
Around 15 police patrols participated in the operation along with additional resources, including forensic technicians.
Around 4 pm, the police worked mainly on obtaining evidence and conducting interrogations.
The Special Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into the actions of the police in relation to the arrest, according to routine.
The crisis support group of the municipality of Vetlanda, the so-called posom group, is involved after the incident and is located in the Mission Church.
