Surprised at how poorly equipped elderly care was

[ad_1]

Almost 90 percent of all Swedes who died in covid-19 are over the age of 70, and 1,333 of them lived in nursing homes.

This despite the fact that Swedish strategy has always been to protect the elderly who are at risk of dying from the coronavirus.

Johan Carlson, head of the Public Health Authority, says that before the crown crisis, care for the elderly was known to be a weaker sector than medical care, but not how serious it really was.

The Minister of Social Affairs: shared responsibility

– I am surprised that there is a big difference between different nursing homes both within regions and between regions. I think that is quite remarkable. In some places, you don’t have the administration, stewardship, and skills to run your business; Although the staff has done their best, it is quite obvious that they have.

Olivia Wigzell, director general of the National Board of Health and Welfare, says they had seen signs of the situation in several reports and that steps had been taken, such as national competence requirements for nurses.

And Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren, S, says on the show that there is a shared responsibility for how it has become what it has become with the high number of deaths among the elderly.

– In general, I want to say that we are a whole society that is jointly responsible. It is clear that a government and a social minister have a responsibility. But we have a situation during the pandemic that no one could have anticipated, she says.

Positive message: risk groups can be further defined

The fact that all those over 70 are considered as risk groups has meant that many Swedes are in quarantine, separated from social contacts. It’s also a health risk that the Public Health Authority has in mind, says Carlson, who he believes is now looking at whether risk groups can be distinguished even better, even among older age groups.

For example, it is expected that one can better define which health conditions and diseases constitute risk groups, and which do not. When asked if the new guidelines can arrive before the summer, he responds:

– We look at it as quickly as possible. We hope to say something.
