On August 21, the ruling parties, the Social Democrats and the Green Party, proposed that sports receive additional support of 1 billion SEK during the crown pandemic.
Now it is clear that the money will go to the sport after the proposal has received the support of the Center Party and the Liberals. It will be included in the amending budget of Finance Minister Magdalena Andersson next week.
This spring, the sport received an initial grant of 500 million crowns. It was designed to compensate for the loss of income, which resulted in the men’s clubs, which generally have a much higher turnover than the larger women’s associations, received 95 percent of the support for the elite soccer team. Something that was highly criticized by the women’s soccer teams.
Björn Eriksson from the Swedish Sports Confederation defends the structure of aid.
– The basic lock is clear, they compensate you for what you would have had as income. It doesn’t preclude there being areas where things can be improved, he tells TT.
But now Amanda Lind opens to change the distribution when the new money is distributed in October. She describes it as if RF and the government learned lessons from this spring.
– So it’s reasonable to include what you need to do for adjustments, he says.
More equality is one of them.
– What I see in front of me is that gender equality is something to be taken into account, says Amanda Lind to TT.
– If a women’s team has more difficulties to survive the crisis of the crown because it has fewer income opportunities than a men’s team, it is something that should come into play, he reasons.
– As I said, it is about ensuring the broad sports movement. But then there may be structural injustices on the ground to be reckoned with, Lind continues.
Sport has been greatly affected of the pandemic. The limitation on the number of people in public gatherings has meant that virtually all sporting events have been closed to the public since March and many associations have been left without significant revenue since exercise competitions and other sports in general were also canceled.
The loss problem for sports has been the same during this period, as the crown situation has continued. We have gone from a hundred meter race to a marathon race, says Björn Eriksson.
The first grants covered the second quarter, from April to June. The new money will last for two quarters, the entire second half of 2020.
Much of the early support went to elite sports. Questions have been raised about how large football clubs such as AIK and IFK Gothenburg, among others, have been able to recruit players, in several cases current or former members of national teams, during an economic crisis.
Amanda Lind says which does not want to comment on the handling of individual clubs, but adds:
These billion will ensure the survival of the sports movement. It is not intended to be a bonus for clubs to recruit expensive players.
