The death toll rises after the advance of Super Typhoon Goni over the Philippines. At least 20 people have died and several are missing after the storm, which is described as the strongest in the world this year.
On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte surveyed the worst-affected areas southeast of the capital Manila, where up to a million people have been evacuated to temporary centers.
“Thanks to the forced evacuation of people, the number of deaths has been minimized,” Duterte spokesman Harry Roque said at a news conference.
The super typhoon has left great chaos behind, knocking down power lines and flooding large areas. In Guinobatan, in the province of Albay, around 300 houses have been buried under the mud and rocks of the Mayon volcano. At the same time, there is growing concern that mass evacuations will lead to the further spread of covid-19.
Goni is the 18th tropical storm to hit the Philippines this year. Last week, 22 people were killed by Typhoon Molave. (TT)
