Study: virus can survive nine hours on skin

The coronavirus can survive for nine hours on human skin, which is longer than previously thought, according to a new study by Japanese researchers. But hand alcohol kills the virus in 15 seconds.

By comparison, a common influenza virus survives less than two hours on human skin.

“The fact that sars-cov-2 (the virus that causes covid-19) survives nine hours on human skin may increase the risk of contact transmission compared to influenza virus, which can increase the rate of transmission, “say the researchers in the study.

The study, published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, points to the need to encourage continuous hand hygiene to slow the spread of infection.

Both the coronavirus and the flu virus died after about 15 seconds when exposed to ethanol, a common ingredient in hand sanitizing.
