How should we interpret the opinion figures?
– There were probably some among the liberals who expected there to be a rebound after Nyamko Sabuni gave the message that the party wants to change the laws and support Ulf Kristersson of the moderates as prime minister, even if that means cooperation with the Democrats from Sweden after the next elections. But that increase is not visible: the Liberals remain at three percent and now there are three parties that are below the parliamentary barrier. It has not been such a situation since the 1990s.
What arguments do liberals traditionally have for voters to vote for the party?
– They changed their name to emphasize their ideology, which is libertarian. They want to remove obstacles to people, to see the rights of the person and individuals, the freedom of companies, free trade, the right to vote and even the rights of employees. The question of the school has also followed the liberals throughout the party’s existence. It is a classic center-right party that has been divided between the right and the left from the beginning and has been part of various governments.
Are there conditions for a bourgeois government in 2022 that liberals can join?
– Yes, if they are willing to accept a budget collaboration with the Swedish Democrats. That is probably the price they will have to pay in that case. So we must remember that the reason the Liberals released Stefan Löfven was that they did not want SD to have a great influence on Swedish politics. Then there are also factual political reasons why the Liberals celebrated the January deal. They have been through various problems that they have been fighting for decades, for example, the defense tax was removed, which was levied on the wealthiest, and Swedish labor law was liberalized.
What can happen this weekend?
– The Liberals have called a party council. About 90 people representing the various county unions will come together and decide which line the party should follow. He seems to be very evenly matched and it’s hard to judge how he will go, although most, even critics, think Sabuni will take the game home. It can be a stormy gathering. Former party leader Bengt Westerberg and several members of parliament have indicated that they may leave the party. How things go during the meeting can decide both the issue of government and how things will go for the Liberals in the next election. It really is a fateful decision.
