June is a month when junior high school students hope to catch mice, make balls for students, photography, flak and jump off students. But this year will be different.
Several schools and municipalities have decided on their own to cancel the celebration altogether or postpone it. Others have not yet stepped foot. The reason is the government’s decision to ban public gatherings with more than 50 people.
One of the Swedish municipalities that was the first to suspend student celebrations was the municipality of Huddinge. Many parents asked with questions about how they would handle everything from truck scales to party tents. Should they be canceled?
In consultation with the directors, the Secondary and Labor Director Patrik Forshage assessed that the recommendations of the Public Health Authority were clear and decided to suspend the traditional celebration.
– It is a painful decision in many ways. Many have looked forward to celebrating and celebrating and the students have worked hard and are worth it. But that was the only reasonable decision based on conditions.
The students’ reactions were mixed.
– There is a great disappointment in many, and it is very understandable. But there is also a great understanding, says Patrik Forshage.
“They live in the jump”
In Gotland, the upper secondary school and the student committee, which is planning the ball-and-mouse effort, recently agreed to postpone the celebration until August. Karin Lekander, assistant principal at Wisbygymnasiet, says the students still hope to be able to go out together in June.

Lekander did not believe that the students were interested in postponing the celebration. But when the proposal came from the student organization, she understood how much they would like to pass the time and get a proper ending. Especially when teaching is now done remotely.
– You want to say goodbye to your teachers in a good way. You fully enter the adult world and want to thank yourself, she says, and she thinks that a postponed celebration can be a kind of manifestation in a situation that is difficult for many young people.

The school’s general director, Peter Fredriksson, understands that it will be a huge disappointment for the students.
– But there is also a future and this should be scared. And then you must be careful, even in the month of June.
It highlights, like others, the difficulty of predicting the survival of the virus. Therefore, it does not recommend traditional celebrations.
– If it had been the director, it would have canceled the celebration of the student. Then he had probably discussed with the students the opportunity to repair everything. But I don’t know how interested they might be in returning for the student celebrations in August. They would like to have it in June and say thanks and goodbye to the school then.
Tegnell: valid for the summer
Public health authority state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell believes that parties should be avoided for a long time, and the regulations governing public meetings remain until June.
– It will continue to apply and will definitely be valid for the summer, he says.
He is convinced that there are innovative ways to hold student celebrations without increasing the spread of the infection. In Gotland, Wisbygymnasiet has been thinking a lot about whether it is possible to implement some kind of termination in June, if it has to be done digitally.
– We have no answers on how to complete the semester for grades one, two or three. I think all primary schools in Sweden face the same dilemma, says Karin Lekander.
