Ströget is now one-way: stop the infection

Several new restrictions took effect in Denmark on Monday.

One of them is that in several cities you can only walk in one direction on pedestrian streets. If you want to go in the “wrong direction”, you just have to take the road down a back side street. This applies, among other things, to Copenhagen’s main shopping street, Ströget.

But the measure is criticized in Denmark. Many call it excessive and that it is only symbolic. Furthermore, it lacks a scientific basis.

– If you look at how many cases of infection we prevent by one-way stroke, we don’t have reliable data on that. I don’t think there are many, says Christian Wejse, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Public Health at Aarhus University.

Christmas shopping one by one

Earlier, during the corona pandemic, authorities tried to urge visitors to Ströget to stay in traffic on the right, but this obviously did not work satisfactorily.

Other restrictions that will be introduced in various Danish municipalities on Monday are:

Larger grocery stores should have one-way aisles.

Holiday purchases can only be made by one person at a time.

A maximum of 10 people can meet for sports and associative activities for children and young people up to 21 years of age.

Elementary school students can only have lunch with their own class.

In addition, all young people between the ages of 15 and 25 are encouraged to take the test.

Planning to close

But these restrictions are only a preview of what is to come. On Sunday evening, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) posted a post on Facebook.

She says the Danish government will present new measures related to the crown in much of the country on Monday.

– We must have better control over the infection before Christmas Eve. It will take a lot of us again, says Mette Frederiksen in the video on Facebook.

According to Mette Frederiksen, the country needs to do something fast.

– The Danish attitude towards the crown remains the same. We must intervene early, to avoid having to take even harsher measures when it is too late, says Mette Frederiksen in the video on Facebook.
