A snowstorm has stopped over northern Sweden and the wind is blowing further south.

Trees have blocked roads in Gävleborg overnight and there is a power outage in various parts of the country at the moment.

Almost all of Sweden can expect storms during the day. SMHI has issued weather warnings for almost all of Sweden.

Very strong winds from the southwest can reach 21-23 meters per second and the SMHI wind defenses in Västra Götaland, Västmanland, Halland and Uppsala counties.

To the north, it is rather the snow that can compensate. At most, it is expected to fall in Västerbotten, where SMHI class 2 warns of snow between 15 and 30 centimeters on Thursday.

According to SMHI, a class 2 warning means very difficult weather. This can mean danger to the public, major property damage, and major disruptions to important social functions.

– There will be about three decimeters of snow in combination with a fresh wind. This means that there may be drift formation and we have issued a class 2 warning there. This means that major disruptions in traffic are expected and the power supply may be affected, says Sofia Söderberg, a meteorologist at SMHI.

Power outages and traffic chaos

SVT Gävleborg reports that trees were felled overnight and blocked roads and downed power lines and caused power outages. According to Ellevio’s electricity map, just over 1,200 people are without electricity in Gävleborg at the moment.

There are also several power outages in Värmland. There are just over 1,100 people here without electricity.

Also in Dalarna, several trees fell overnight and blocked roads and train tracks, creating chaos in traffic, Dalademokraten reports.

The Swedish Transport Administration decided on Wednesday evening to suspend train traffic on the Uddevalla-Strömstad, Varberg-Borås and Håkantorp-Gårdsjö sections due to strong winds.

The trains are expected to return to normal operation from Friday morning, November 20.

Warning: flying trees and trampolines

Bengt Olsson, press director for the Swedish Transport Administration, says the canceled train traffic in western Sweden is a preventive measure. But at the same time it warns of flying trampolines, trees and outdoor furniture in the storm.

– If we let go of trains when the wind is very strong, we know from experience that trees can come running. But it can also be garden furniture that has not been repaired for the winter. We have had in several cases where they have fallen on airlines or something else, he tells SVT.

Trampolines are something that can really gain momentum in the wind, according to him.

– It is by far the most flying things that exist, he tells the channel.
