Nationwide vaccination against covid-19 has been ongoing for almost a week. In Stockholm, vaccination is in full swing in special housing in municipalities.
– Those who manage the medical interventions there together with the accommodation staff carry out the vaccination. Within a week or so, we will start vaccinating care staff in nursing homes, says Magnus Thyberg, head of covid-19 vaccination at the health and medical care administration in the Stockholm region.
At the same time he says that Stockholm has chosen to reserve half of the doses so far allocated to the county. Instead of vaccinating faster, 10,000 to 15,000 doses remain.
Magnus Thyberg says this is because the vaccine was approved so recently and for that reason they don’t feel safe with supply chains.
However, the recommendation of the public health authority is to use the vaccine that is delivered and the authority does not consider it necessary to save a second dose.
– You should definitely use the vaccine you have, there is no reason as it seems today, to save vaccines for future use, but everything indicates that we will have regular deliveries, said state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell at Tuesday’s press conference.
Magnus Thyberg says that the decision of the Stockholm Region is based on a balance of risks.
– Our assessment is that there is uncertainty about the number of doses and delivery times. Therefore, we have chosen to save on doses to ensure that our sickest and most fragile can also receive the second dose. As more vaccines are approved and distributed, this will be a temporary problem.
The Public Health Agency has created an order of priority for which groups should be vaccinated, when, where the elderly in special housing come first
Although Stockholm will follow the Public Health Agency’s order of prioritization regarding who should get the vaccine first, Magnus Thyberg believes that there will soon be several groups vaccinated in parallel.
– It is not as simple as taking one group and when you are done, take the next one.
When can healthcare professionals start getting vaccinated?
– We think we can start them in a few weeks.
More than 16,000 doses of vaccine have been sent to care providers who vaccinate at home.
– They point out that it works well and according to plan, says Magnus Thyberg, who also says that the will to get vaccinated seems to be great.
Some numbers on how many who have received the vaccine do not yet exist.
Detailed planning for ongoing vaccination in the region is now underway.
– Applies to those who receive home care, home care and over 70 years. We are also very far in planning with respect to other risk groups and healthcare personnel, says Magnus Thyberg.
However, when the public, in addition to risk groups and those who work in health and care, must receive their vaccine, there is no detailed planning yet, according to Thyberg.
