In the last four days, from October 23 to 27, another 1,678 cases of covid-19 have been found in the Stockholm region. In the corresponding period last week, 905 cases were found. Of the new patients, nine have been detected among the elderly in special homes for the elderly. This is stated in the latest weekly report from the region.
– It’s getting too high. We don’t want to see an increase as big as now. This is a 70% increase from week 42 to week 43, so we now increased by almost 3,000 cases in week 43, says Maria Rotzén Östlund, interim infection control physician in the Stockholm Region.
A total of 119 patients with established covid-19 are treated in emergency hospitals or geriatric care in the region. That’s 34 more compared to the previous report. A total of fourteen patients are in the intensive care unit, an increase of four people.
– Now it is an acute situation and very important that we all continue with what has worried us so much – maintain physical distance. Because it is the best way not to get infected, says Maria Rotzén Östlund.
She notes that the vast majority of new cases are people who have been sampled at home and therefore have milder symptoms. But it’s still an ominous trend.
– The increasing number of cases means there is a higher risk that more people will become seriously ill and therefore end up in the hospital, and a higher risk that more people will be in the intensive care unit and eventually die. We don’t want that.
TT: Have people started to be careless with restrictions?
– We don’t have statistics, but there are rumors of more house parties and that more people are starting to return to their workplaces. We want to encourage everyone who can to continue working from home.
– Those who, so to speak, lead our society by caring for our sick, our children, cook our food, stand in shops, etc., must be able to use public transport and move in society. Everyone else who can work from home should, says Maria Rotzén Östlund.
TT: How do you see that nine new cases have been discovered in special housing?
– As it is a social spread, the infection has re-entered there, which is very sad. But we have good routines to track and limit infection. Companies solve this in a very good way to try to prevent infection, says Maria Rotzén Östlund.
