The oral protection recommendation is introduced immediately and is valid until March 22. In addition to public transportation, several areas are affected:
– We also recommend mouth protection in indoor environments such as the hairdresser, the pharmacy or the grocery store, says Rotzén Östlund at a press conference.
Those who must be at work are advised to wear mouth guards in the workplace as distance cannot be maintained.
– The general rule is that you should be at work as little as possible, if you can work from home. But in situations where you can’t avoid being less than two meters away for a quarter of an hour, you should have a mouth guard.
School exceptions
An exception is schools, where Maria Rotzén Östlund refers to the fact that such decisions must be made at the national level in consultation between the National Agency for Education and the Swedish Public Health Agency. In the staff room, however, the same recommendations apply as in other workplaces.
A cloud of unease is the upcoming sports vacation, as many Stockholm residents have planned to travel to the mountains.
– You must take responsibility for traveling safely and not meeting new people during sports holidays. This also applies to those who stay at home, you have to think about not expanding your social circle, not having extra parties or going out with new friends, says Maria Rotzén Östlund.
After the sports holidays, restrictions will be introduced for young people in the region, as school principals are encouraged to introduce full-time distance in upper secondary school and upper secondary school during the 10th week.
It looked good after Christmas
TT: Why do all these measures come only now? There have long been fears of the further spread of the infection.
– After Christmas, the spread of the infection decreased and then stabilized. We all expected it to be downhill. But when the spread of the infection has increased again for two weeks, we wanted a two-week observation period, it is time to present regional recommendations to curb a third wave in time, if possible, says Rotzén Östlund.
TT: You recommend mouth guards in shopping malls. Have you also considered closing shopping centers with the help of the Pandemic Law or further limiting the number of customers allowed?
– It is the government that decides on the pandemic law, I have no control over it. Then I can contact the Public Health Agency, which has contact with the government.
TT: But in this situation, is it not necessary to close a little more?
– Now we come out with these recommendations, and I still hope you have the strength to hold out a little longer and not be so much in shopping centers.
Welcome message
In addition to the increase in the number of cases in the region, the number of people admitted to intensive care has also increased slightly.
– You can compare this to a marathon. Many are very tired. Vaccines are available at the finish line. Now it’s important that we don’t slow down but get to the finish line, says Maria Rotzén Östlund.
But the expected supply of vaccines has fallen dramatically. The forecast for February is that the region will receive almost 80 percent fewer doses than expected in December.
– The Stockholm region is ready to vaccinate when the vaccines arrive, says Maria Rotzén Östlund.
In addition to Stockholm, the regions of Västra Götaland, Gävleborg, Sörmland and Västerbotten have so far introduced stricter recommendations on oral protection indoors and on public transport.
Västra Götaland, Västerbotten and Skåne also recommend distance education for everyone in secondary school and high school after sports holidays.
