Stockholm is one of the worst affected capitals in Europe during the pandemic, shows a review from Aftonbladet.
Aftonbladet has collected and compared the number of deaths in seven European capitals: Berlin, London, Madrid, Oslo, Paris, Rome and Stockholm. The results show that Stockholm has been the second most affected, only Madrid has worse figures.
Stockholm has had 113 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, a total of 2,688 dead. In Madrid, 170 have died for every 100,000 inhabitants. Oslo is one of the seven cities that finish at the bottom of the list, where 9 people have died for every 100,000 inhabitants.
– It is a tragedy that we will really have to investigate, why it happened like this. I’m really sorry about this, says Johan Styrud, chief physician at Danderyd Hospital and president of the Stockholm Medical Association, to the newspaper.
He believes that the reason Oslo has had so many fewer deaths may be more stringent restrictions.
– Oslo was very militant at first, very powerful. They closed the community and he was not allowed to change towns for quite some time. Also, they closed the border quite harshly against Sweden this spring, says Johan Styrud.
Jan Albert, professor of infection control at the Karolinska Institutet, says the information may be correct, although the statistics can be misleading.
– It is not calculated in exactly the same way in all countries, so the figures are a bit difficult to compare. But the numbers are probably somewhat correct. We also know that Stockholm is the part of Sweden that has had the greatest spread of the infection, he tells Aftonbladet.
Several affected European capitals are not included in the review, including Brussels, Prague and Amsterdam.
