Almost two months have passed since the unexpected news came, Stina Nilsson had decided to abandon cross-country skiing to invest in biathlon.
After training primarily with coach Jean-Marc Chabloz since March, Stina Nilsson has spent the past two weeks training with the rest of the biathlon team.
– There have been joint training sessions with shooting and physical exercises, and it feels really fun to be on the team now. They have been very friendly and extremely welcoming. And I’m still incredibly happy and happy with my decision, “says Stina Nilsson.
If Hanna Öberg was previously the Swedish biathlete, who, after her great successes, has received the most attention in recent years, Stina Nilsson has also been very focused since entering the world of biathlon.
– But I’m not worried that it could get the attention of the other pilots. I don’t think they are either.
Stina Nilsson on the change to biathlon
On another front, however, Stina Nilsson has reacted to recent attention. When SVT caught Nilsson in television footage in late March, when he trained to shoot at the Östersund Ski Stadium, the news quickly spread about his new company.
– When those television images came out, I never thought it would be so important. And honestly, I didn’t understand the value of news on that either.
– I had not anticipated that there would be such extreme curiosity.
– I had shot a lot in my house in Malung before then, so I thought it would not be a big problem to bring a gun to the ski stadium in Östersund. Without it, it would seem more like I was dating my friends.
– But it was an attention that I did not expect then.
Stina Nilsson says she has always more or less tried to avoid taking part in what is said and written about her in the media. But since then the switch to biathlon has become even more restrictive.
– I have consciously chosen not to participate in positive or critical voices. I think if you go to the city, it is not sure that you want to know exactly what everyone thinks and thinks about you. And it’s the same with the media, I also don’t want to know what other people think of me in those contexts.
– The most important thing is that I know why I changed my sport and that I am happy with that decision. I don’t have to seek other people’s opinions.
“I always live in quarantine”
The current crown pandemic has greatly changed the daily lives of many athletes, but for Stina Nilsson, most things are as usual.
– I train as if there were competitions this winter. I have to do that, otherwise it would be difficult. But I have great respect for whether or not it will, human health should always come first.
The directives to watch out for during the corona pandemic are also not particularly affecting Stina Nilsson.
– Basically I live in quarantine all year, anyway. I’m used to washing my hands frequently and avoiding crowds, not surprising.
Can compete in length in winter
When Stina Nilsson decided to invest in biathlon, she joined the Lima SKG biathlon club. But last week, SportExpress could reveal that Nilsson also chose to sign a new three-year contract with his cross-country ski club IFK Mora.
Something that opens up for Stina Nilsson to compete in length even this winter.
– You should never say never, that I chose to extend is that I feel a lot of loyalty to the club. They have been taking me under their wings for seven years and I think if there were any gaps in my competition schedule that would allow me, for example, to run a distance in a long championship relay, then it would have been fantastic fun for the club .
– But right now I feel like I won’t compete in length in the first place.
