It was in the league final against Rosengård in late August that Gothenburg’s star forward Stina Blackstenius was injured.
The message a few days later: a tendon tear in the back of the thigh.
Still, the 24-year-old has been selected in the next qualifying team for the European Championship.
– In consultation with the Gothenburg coach and the medical team, we took her out because there is a possibility that she could play, not against Hungary but against Iceland, says national team captain Peter Gerhardsson.
– You never know with prognosis, but if the medical team says that it is possible that I will play against Iceland, that will be enough for me. It’s worse if we don’t take it out and realize it could have played.
The ubication gets worse, there is a chance to bring someone else in at a later stage, says the league captain. But a playable Blackstenius can be crucial.
The star decided both the World Cup quarter-finals against Canada and the World Cup quarter-finals against Germany when Sweden won bronze in France last year.
– May not be a 90 minute player. But I’m just as interested in a final elf, says Gerhardsson.
The qualifier for the European Championship was ready on hiatus this spring due to the corona pandemic. Now it will be played ready in the autumn before a European Championship that has been moved from 2021 to 2022.
Sweden, who top their group after three straight wins, will meet Hungary at home in Gothenburg on September 17 and then Iceland away on September 22, a match that has long been a question mark due to the quarantine regulations of the country.
The seasoned Nilla Fischer and Olivia Schough are back in the team after not being in the Algarve cup earlier this year. Filippa Curmark from Gothenburg is a debutant in the national team.
– He’s had a fantastic development this year, says Gerhardsson of the 25-year-old midfielder.
– In each game we have noticed qualities that are interesting. We want her to sit and give herself also in a national A team.
