– This is something we have worked on in the EU for a long time and the agreement is an important basis for the continuation of the relationship with the UK, says Prime Minister Stefan Löfven in a written statement to SVT.
According to von der Leyen, the negotiations have been difficult, but the EU now agrees with Britain on a “fair and balanced deal”.
– With a deal we are much better equipped, although of course it will still be noticed that the UK is leaving the EU. The framework now exists for future close cooperation between the UK, Sweden and the EU. This is something we look forward to, says Stefan Löfven.
Swedish EU Minister Hans Dahlgren also says this is very good news.
– Good news for Sweden, good news for the whole EU and for the UK that we will have orderly conditions for many years to come. It also feels like a relief, because this was last minute, Hans Dahlgren tells SVT.
“More than a trade agreement”
The deal means a lot to Sweden, which trades a lot with the UK, but it is much more than just a trade deal, says Dahlgren:
– It is about collaborating in safety, energy and social protection networks. So it’s really nice to have this in port.
What was at stake?
– For all imports we would have had to pay customs, it would have been much more expensive for consumers in Sweden. Also uncertainties about what will happen next in areas of cooperation in research, security, energy and transport, etc. At least now we have clear guidelines to follow, says Hans Dahlgren.
