Paul Rusesabagina is being led out of court in handcuffs after serving formal charges on Monday.

Former Rwandan hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina, made world famous through the Hollywood movie “Hotel Rwanda,” risks life in prison if convicted of the crimes he is charged with, according to Kigali prosecutors.

Rusesabagina was formally charged Monday with thirteen different crimes, including terrorism, participation in murder and having formed or joined a group of armed militias.

– For some of the crimes you can be sentenced to 25 years, for others up to life imprisonment, says Faustin Nkusi, spokesman for the Rwandan prosecution.

Rusesabagina, 66, fled abroad after the genocide, when her actions saved the lives of more than 1,200 people. In recent times, he has been very critical of the current president of the country, Paul Kagame, and also called the armed opposition to the government in a YouTube video.

At the end of August he disappeared from the United Arab Emirates, where he was. A few days later, he was shown handcuffed in Kigali. Family members believe the Rwandan authorities kidnapped him, something the president denies.

On Monday, Rusesabagina admitted in court that he had contributed the equivalent of just over 200,000 Swedish crowns to a militant branch of one of the main opposition groups. She apologized for any irregularities the move may have caused. She also said that she did not want to respond to the allegations at the same time, but individually.
