Sports holidays and crown: this is how the Swedes traveled

Sports holiday trips from Stockholm to Härjedalen, with ski resorts such as Vemdalen, Lofsdalen and Ramundberget, increased considerably this year. Displays data from Telia’s Crowd Insights service, which is based on anonymous data from Telia’s mobile network and compares trips to the same period last year.

One possible reason is that in Härjedalen there are more smaller ski resorts that are perceived as less narrow and also easier to reach with your own car.

– We clearly see that the people of Stockholm have chosen Härjedalen. Åre is more or less the same as last year, there is no explosion there. But many more have gone to Härjedalen, says Kristofer Ågren, director of Telia Crowd Insights.

Traveling from Stockholm Municipality a Härjedalen increased by 18 percent compared to 2020, and a similar pattern can be observed in other municipalities in Stockholm.

This is also demonstrated by the fact that more people moved to the site in Härjedalen during weeks 7 and 8, when Malmö and Gothenburg had their sports holidays.

Åre also didn’t see a major slowdown due to the pandemic. The number of people who traveled from Stockholm to Åre during the Stockholm sports holiday, week 9, even increased slightly. But considering the number of people who moved there during sports vacation weeks, which can be affected by factors other than traveling from big cities, it was roughly the same level as last year.

In Dalarna County, on the other hand, there is a substantial reduction: 20 percent less than last year. But it is not mainly the trips to Sälen that have decreased, but to cities like Falun and Mora. For both, trips from Stockholm decreased by 41 percent during week 9. Some parts of Dalarna may have been affected by the fact that this year’s edition of Vasaloppet was carried out in a smaller variant, adapted to the crown, but that’s probably only part of the explanation.

The Public Health Agency has not He advises against mountain trips during sports holidays in general, but has given advice on how to do it, limiting group travel, avoiding new contacts and making sure you can isolate yourself or get home safe and sound if you develop symptoms.

State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell has defended it, saying congestion can also occur in the hometown.

– It is not obvious that it is better for everyone to stay in Stockholm, he said at a press conference in early February.

But not everyone agrees. Britt Åkerlind, an infection control doctor in the Östergötland region, is one of them.

– I think it is an advantage that the Eastern Goths stay at home during the sports holidays. But the most important thing is that we think about keeping the distance between us and in everything that we undertake to include the recommendations that apply, he told SVT before the holidays.
