Sports holidays and avalanche danger in the mountains

Sports holidays are underway and the large amounts of snow in the north make avalanche danger significant in much of the mountainous world.

Staying within the slopes area and following the weather forecasts is the advice of the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency for mountain tourists in the coming weeks. The avalanche hazard is currently considered to be significant, meaning one third on the five-point scale, in the northernmost areas.

In the mountains of northern Lapland, with ski resorts like Abisko and Riksgränsen, it will snow heavily in the coming days.

– Of course it is perfect for those sports tourists who like real winter weather, but when new snow settles on an already weak snow cover avalanches can be surprisingly large and can be a dangerous combination with many people on the ground, says Per-Olov Wikberg, mountain security council coordinator for the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency.

However, if you stay on the piste areas and on great trails, your skiing must be safe. Typically, it’s people staying on steep slopes that trigger avalanches, Wikberg notes.

– Yes, this is where it’s fun to go, you want to jump off rocks and hanging skids, but the advice now is to be very careful on slopes with a 25-30 degree slope.

According to Per-Olov Wikberg, the tendency for mountain tourists to absorb avalanche information and act accordingly has increased, at least among those who travel a lot.

– It is easy to understand a five degree avalanche scale, but not so easy to understand what the avalanche hazard is due to. There is now a comprehensive website, lavinprognoser.se, which collects information from all mountain areas and is updated daily.
