Spain paralyzed by blizzard Filomena

The Filomena snow storm hits Spain with a weather the country has not experienced in decades.

Snowfall on Friday is expected to continue into the weekend. The location is “exceptional and probably historical” according to the meteorological authority Aemet.

In more than half of Spain notices had been issued and the capital, Madrid, was surprised by the amount of snow. Madrid, as well as Castilla La Mancha and Valencia, are among the most affected regions. In some mountainous areas, the depth of the snow was 50 centimeters.

Madrid airport was forced to close on Friday. On Madrid’s two main highways, many cars were stuck in snow and ice and another 400 roads were affected. According to the railway company Renfe, rail traffic was also severely affected and the authorities urged people to avoid traveling.

The storm Filomena had swept the Canary Islands and swept the rain across the Iberian Peninsula before spreading the snow.
