New recommendations that nightclubs are closed have been established at the entrance of a nightclub in Seoul.
In South Korea’s capital Seoul, bars and nightclubs are closed until further notice, after several new cases of covid-19 have been found.
The order comes from the city’s mayor, who fears a second wave of coronavirus infection. Starting Wednesday, the government eased the country’s restrictions.
“Neglect can lead to an explosion of infected people,” says Mayor Park Won-Soon.
South Korea has attracted international attention because it has been able to stop the virus since early March and daily life has begun to return to normal.
But now, around 20 people have been found to be infected, all of which are related to an infected 29-year-old boy who visited five clubs and bars in Seoul’s main nightclub district, Itaewon, last weekend. Some 7,200 people are believed to have visited the five nightclubs and authorities expect the number of infected to increase.
On Sunday, the streets of Itaewon were full of deserted people. “Temporarily closed” and “Preventive measures” were reading signs posted outside the area’s bars and nightclubs.
“Such a thing can happen anywhere, not just here in Itaewon,” says chef Kim Jae-Sung, who works in the area.
“The important thing now is that people maintain a social distance, avoid confined spaces and think that this incident will not be repeated,” he continues.
South Korea began screening large parts of the population early on for the new coronavirus, which enabled detection of refined infections. Like Sweden, a curfew has not been introduced in South Korea, but citizens have been encouraged to maintain a social distance.
“It won’t end until it ends,” President Moon Jae-In said in a speech.
– We must remain vigilant until the end, and never lower the garden when it comes to epidemic prevention.
In the last 24 days, a total of 34 new cases have been identified in the country, which is the largest daily increase in a month. A total of more than 10,800 people have been infected with covid-19, of which 256 have died.
