The new announcement from the Trump administration means companies can conclude oil drilling deals just before Joe Biden takes office as the new president.
The future president has opposed Trump’s proposal, meaning that one of his first decisions as president could be to stop drilling for oil.
The place in question is the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, which is home to rare birds, wild reindeer, and polar bears. Most of the area is still untouched by humans, and therefore oil extraction has become a major problem among many environmental activists.
“Another way for the Trump administration to meet its allies in the oil industry,” Adam Kolton, director of the Alaska Wilderness League, said, according to the NY Times.

– But it is disappointing that this administration to the end maintains so little respect for American public places, wildlife, and the indigenous peoples who depend on them.
At the same time, the message is well received elsewhere.
Industry group The American Petroleum Institute says in a statement that oil drilling will generate more high-paying jobs and more money for the state.
The new announcement means that oil companies have 30 days to report which areas of Alaska they are interested in.
Thereafter, the federal Bureau of Land Management, BLM, will make a decision on sales within 30 days.
