A first delivery with 10,000 doses of corona vaccine will soon arrive in Sweden. Stockholm, Västra Götaland region and Skåne will receive 425 doses each, while the other 18 regions will receive 200 each. Half of the doses will be saved.

– To ensure that those who are vaccinated actually get their second dose, said Marie Morell, chair of the SKR health delegation, during a press conference on Tuesday.

During New Years week, there will be 80,000 additional doses, and then roughly the same number week to week.

The danger is not over

The Minister of Social Affairs Lena Hallengren also participated in the press conference. According to her, the vaccine is assured for the entire population of Sweden and all regions are ready to start vaccinating on December 27. The goal is for all adults and children in the risk group to be offered vaccination during the first half of 2021.

– But the start of vaccination does not mean that we can sit down. We must protect the elderly and risk groups, many can still become infected and become seriously ill, says Lena Hallengren.

Johan Carlsson, Director General of the Swedish Public Health Agency, agreed.

– I would like to remind you that the road ahead is quite long. But this is an important first step.

Protect the most vulnerable

As GP has previously said, residents in special homes for the elderly or people with home care will receive the vaccine first. It also concerns staff caring for the elderly, as well as family members of people with home care.

– The objective of covid vaccination at this stage is mainly to protect the most vulnerable. There will be no doses at once that meet the needs of the entire country. That’s why we must prioritize, says Johan Carlson.

During the press conference, government officials took the opportunity to emphasize the importance of getting vaccinated. The government has asked the relevant authorities to conduct national information efforts on vaccination against covid-19. The information should be directed, in particular, to the groups that are usually less vaccinated.

The task also includes countering misinformation and rumors about vaccination.

– The vaccine is one of the greatest successes of science. The vaccine saves lives, Lena Hallengren said.
