Belarusian footballer Sergey Kazeka suffered a broken spine after being arrested by police during political protests in Minsk, reports opposition telegram service Nexta Live.

During the ongoing demonstrations against current President Alexander Lukashenko, the police allegedly arrested Sergey Kazeka with such violence that he broke his spine at the third vertebra and injured his kidneys.

The 34-year-old is a two-time national cup winner and double champion of Latvia, but now plays as a midfielder for second team Krumkachy Minsk. According to Nexta Live, he and his teammate Pavel Rossolko were arrested on suspicion of vandalizing a police car. Both have denied and said they only ended up amid protests on the way home after training.

Both were taken to the police station after the arrest, but Sergei Kazeka is later said to have been taken by ambulance to receive hospital care for his injuries.

KHL in the midst of chaos

Protests in Belarus have continued since current President Alexander Lukashenko was reelected on August 9 on suspicion of electoral fraud. As protests continue, league play continues in national sports.

The KHL season starts on Thursday and the Finnish Jokerit, with four Swedes in the squad, will play its debut on the away ice against Dinamo Minsk, where Adam Almqvist plays.
