A suspected pericarditis.
That was the message 20-year-old Edvin Kurtulus received this week.
Now the talented HBK knows there is no danger.
– It was a knot in the stomach that disappeared, he tells Fotbollskanalen.

Halmstad BK talent Edvin Kurtulus, 20, has taken a regular spot as a right-back for Superettan this year and also recently made his debut for the Kosovo U21 national team against England in the Championship qualifiers. of Europe U21. Last week, however, he received a message that made him believe that he could be out of football for a long time.

When the 20-year-old woke up on Monday, he felt pressure in his chest, at the same time that he also had difficulty breathing. Then he went to a health center, they examined him and told him it could be one pericarditis.

This means, according to the Care Guide, that the double membrane that surrounds the heart has become inflamed. and that, therefore, it is more difficult for the heart to pump blood and that the blood circulation worsens. However, with treatment, the swelling can go away quickly, but it can also take several months or years.

– I felt it stretch on my chest. I didn’t end up short of breath, but I had to strain to breathe and think about it all the time. Then I contacted Simon (Bakkioui, HBK physiotherapist) who sent me to a health center, where I did an ECG. They then suspected that there might be pericarditis, which led to my being sent to a hospital. Then they did ECG and blood tests, and then the ECG also showed traces, while the blood test and ultrasound were perfect, 20-year-old tells Fotbollskanalen.

Therefore, Kurtulus has now been told that he is not suffering from anything serious and that he will soon return to the field in the Superettan.

– It is, as Simon says, that elite athletes tend to have a slightly thicker heart, which means that those things can be shown, without being anything. I have not had any inflammation, no viruses or been ill. It was also maybe a bit too much with the matches and the national team, so it can be a mix of that with stress and other things. Now I have rested a bit and have recovered physically and mentally. I feel good now.

Were you worried after the first message?
– They asked me and I was about to start crying, but I tried to stay. I tried to think that there are worse things in life. When it comes to heart and lungs, people don’t care much about soccer either. So it’s about a life, not a career. I was worried about my heart, but then of course my thoughts also revolved around what would happen to football. He still felt it would work, but he didn’t know how long he would be away. You are young, you are hungry and you want to play. It was, as I said, difficult to listen to, but with the support of the family I managed to calm my feelings and be calm.

Was it a relief when they told you it wasn’t serious?
– It was a knot in the stomach that disappeared. I just thought it was okay. Then I was able to rest a bit and now I can go back to the field even stronger. It was mostly mental and pretty tough those days. We also decided that he would rest for a few days.

Therefore, Kurtulus had to follow up this weekend’s win against AFC Eskilstuna from home and will probably not play Umeå on Wednesday at Superettan.

– I have exercised a bit, I have trained a training and I will probably already join the team on Monday. But I don’t think I’m going to play (against Umeå). We’ll see. It’s about how I feel and how I feel.

At the same time, Kurtulus remembers a fun meeting of the U21 national team. He made his debut for the Kosovo Under-21 team and played 90 minutes in a 6-0 loss to star-studded England.

– It was a new experience and a new experience. My parents, cousins and relatives are from there, so it was a bit special that they were all there. It was also fun meeting England as they are good players, at the same time that you could see where you are in development compared to them. We did well in the first half, but then it was gone in the second half. It was fun. I was hoping to play central defense there, but I was able to play right-back too, so it’s just to take new steps.

The 20-year-old believes that at this point it was obvious to choose to play for the Kosovo under-21 national team, but that he could possibly choose to play for the Sweden national team A in the future if it becomes relevant.

– At this time it was quite simple, as only Kosovo found out. As I don’t lock myself in either, I thought I could go there just as easily and play against a good opponent. It was the only option, so it wasn’t that difficult. If Sweden enters the picture, it is quite possible that it will reason in a different way and think about the choice it makes, but here and there it was not difficult, she says.

Kurtulus continues:

– I have not made a decision and it is not a decision that I will make now. If you arrive in the future, you can talk to people who can give advice at that time. In the end, it’s also about how my heart feels, but right now I won’t make a decision. I am open to both.

What are your ambitions in your career?
– In the short term, we as a team will go up to the Allsvenskan. So I want, for my part, to play as center back as soon as possible. Right now I’m a center back who plays right back. From there, I want to play my best and make the move from Europe to the big leagues. That is my big goal, that’s where I want to go.

Kurtulus is this year on the list of 14 appearances on the Superettan. Halmstads BK also ranks second in league play and is fighting for promotion to the Allsvenskan.
