Over the past 24 hours, Västerbotten police have received several calls from reindeer on the roads in the region. On Sunday morning, there were between 25 and 30 reindeer on the E4 south of Robertsfors, while there was one reindeer on the E12 near Ersboda.
It is the large amounts of snow in recent days that make the reindeer look for the walking paths where it is easier to get there, says Elisabeth Glaas, a press release in the North Police Region.
– What can happen then is that the reindeer cannot get out of there due to the high plow walls on the sides of the road. The edges can be up to two meters high, and if they can’t get out, the animals get very stressed, which can lead to accidents.
On Saturday night, at least twelve reindeer were killed when a truck collided with a herd of reindeer along the E4 in Ånäset, prompting the village of Malå Sami to urge road users to slow down. , reports SVT Nyheter Västerbotten.
– It will be like death row for reindeer when trucks thunder along E4, says Lars Stensund, whose reindeer were killed, to SVT.
Poor visibility in combination with the large amount of snow requires road users to be more vigilant, and if there are animals on the road, the driver should try to avoid stressing them, urges Elisabeth Glaas.
– We have had milder weather on the coast, but inland cold snow still falls and can cause very poor visibility. Plus, it can be very slippery, so all road users now have an obligation to show consideration, he says.
