The heavy snowstorm hits traffic Monday morning.

The trucks are parked and SMHI has issued a class 1 warning in Västerbotten.

The Swedish Transport Administration warns of difficult road conditions in most of northern Sweden.

– There are large quantities for the season, says Max Lindberg Stoltz, meteorologist at SMHI.

High winds and large amounts of snow prevented several planes from landing at Norrbotten and had to turn around on Sunday night. The snow chaos has continued overnight until Monday and in Västerbotten, SMHI has issued a class 1 warning for snowfall with 5-15 centimeters of snow.

– This mainly raises traffic problems in Västerbotten, Norrbotten and Västernorrland. It’s not quite as drifting snow, but on the other hand we have wet elements that make the snow heavy, sloppy and muddy, creating tough road conditions, says Max Lindberg Stoltz, a meteorologist at SMHI.

Stationary trucks on the E4

According to the Swedish Transport Administration, there is a risk that road conditions will be difficult in almost all of northern Sweden on Monday morning. Several trucks are stopped on the slippery slope. At 3 o’clock last night, a truck entered the ditch on the E4 off Jämtön in Norrbotten County. The road is closed during salvage work and, according to the Swedish Transport Administration’s preliminary forecast, traffic will be at a standstill until at least 8.30 am.

– There are many exits and several vehicles stopped in traffic, more than usual. But no serious incidents or accidents have been reported, says Peter Jonsson, press spokesman for the Swedish Transport Administration.

On the E4 northbound, at the height of Bye between Timrå and Härnösand, several trucks are stopped on a single lane section. The Swedish Transport Administration warns of queues and asks for caution.

New snow Tuesday night

During the morning and morning, the snowfall subsides and the low pressure continues further east over Finland. But on Tuesday night, a new low pressure is expected with rainfall over Sweden.

– Mainly the north of Svealand is affected by snowfall. But there is soft air, which means that snow quickly turns to rain. After that, the snowfall area will move north to north Norrland on Wednesday night, says Max Lindberg Stoltz.

Up to two decimeters of snow have fallen locally at various locations in North Norrland on Sunday and the night before Monday.

– There are large quantities for the season, even if it is not an unusually early snowfall. Most of the time, the snowpack forms from the mountains, but now it has started on the coast in the eastern part of North Norrland and is a bit unusual, he says.
