That is the conclusion reached by researchers from Columbia University in New York, USA, after analyzing the result of 101 newborns whose mothers were infected with the new coronavirus at birth.
Most of the children lived with their mothers during the first period, but were placed in a crib two meters from the mother’s bed when the mother rested. Staff encouraged both breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact, provided the mother wore a mask and washed her hands and breasts with soap and water.
Of the 101 newborns, only two were infected, although none of them had clinical symptoms of COVID-19.
A follow-up of half the children, including the two who tested positive for the virus, showed that all the children were doing well within two weeks of birth.
“We believe that it is especially important that mothers with COVID-19 have the opportunity to breastfeed their newborns. We know that breast milk protects your baby from a number of infectious agents and can help protect your baby from sars-cov-2 infection. In most studies, it has not been possible to detect sars-cov-2 in breast milk. However, antibodies to the virus have been detected in breast milk, “said one of the study’s authors, Cynthia Gyamfi-Bannerman, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University, in a news release.
