Before the world had barely heard of the coronavirus and the pandemic, the number of prohibited passages on Stockholm’s commuter trains and subways was just over 1.4 million on a typical business day.
An indication of how many people use Stockholm’s local traffic is through the statistics of the number of blocked passages that take place every day.
During the spring, the number of barrier steps dropped dramatically to about 35 percent of the number during the corresponding period in 2019, from 1.4 million to just under 500,000 barrier steps.
Claes Keisu, who is press officer for the traffic administration in the Stockholm region, says that after the summer they saw an increase in travel, compared to what it seemed in the spring.
During week 35, the number of blocked tickets exceeded 800,000, and there the number remained until week 45, when it was reduced to just under 700,000 blocked tickets.
– We interpret it as clear signs that the neighbors have taken the town halls, says Claes Keisu.
“There is no technical capacity”
Although it is not possible to keep statistics on all modes of transport, Keisu believes that passenger development in local bus and train traffic follows commuter trains and the metro.
– But the congestion of the crown occurs at certain times, places and lines. Typically in the morning and evening rush hours, Keisu says while noting that SL generates as much traffic as they have the opportunity to.
– In rail traffic, there is no technical capacity to drive more frequently than we already do.
Avoid trade points
According to Keisu, the congestion also differs depending on the stops in which you move.
– There is an increased risk of crown congestion, especially during peak hours on exchanges like T-Centralen, Gullmarsplan, Fridhemsplan and Odenplan, he says and continues.
– In the subway, commuter trains and commuter trains, people tend to want to travel in the first or last car to gain a few meters when getting on and off. Then there will be congestion in some cars, while there may be a lot of space in between.
Here’s how to avoid congestion.
Avoid these stops:
Crossroads: Liljeholmen and Gullmarsplan
Saltsjöbanan: Henriksdal
Lidingöbanan: Ropsten
Roslagsbanan: Stockholm Östra
Subway and commuter trains:
T-Centralen, Slussen, Gullmarsplan, Fridhemsplan and Odenplan
Avoid these bus lines:
Line 4 in the city center
Line 179 north
Line 79 between Kista C – Rinkeby
Avoid rush hours:
If it is absolutely necessary to travel, avoid going between 06 and 09 and between 15 and 18.
Remember to always wash your hands before and after the trip. Stay clear of others in stations, on board and when getting on and off.
And if it’s full on board, take the next departure.
