Skövde: The double life of computer scientists: they sold drugs by the millions

On March 5 this year, the police went to an address in Skövde. The task was to speak to the owner of the apartment about a suspected crime.

When the front door was opened, the patrol immediately noticed that something was wrong.

“He was very nervous and shocked just by our presence.”a police officer later wrote in a memo.

Once in the apartment, the police found large quantities of drugs, but also tools to “make and mix our own substances.”

As the search of the house continued, another man, who was also suspected of being involved, arrived at the house.

Tax: Sold for 7.6 million

The men, aged 24 and 25 respectively, are being prosecuted for extremely serious drug offenses.

According to the indictment, they have sold drugs on encrypted websites through the so-called Darknet for just over 7.6 million SEK between July 2016 and March 2020.

Buyers are located in 24 countries around the world, including Israel, Japan, Australia, the United States, and Germany.

The men first bought the drugs themselves and then resold them. Among other things, they called themselves “Chemist’s Housekeeper” and “Police Drug.”

The transactions have been made with the cryptocurrency Bitcoin.

– That we have directed this matter was more or less a coincidence. A police officer went to the apartment to hear the man in another case, but there was more to the apartment than he expected, says chamber prosecutor Sofia Karlsson.

Related companies managed

The two defendants are already unpunished.

Based on the research documentation, it appears they went to high school and like to play computer games in their spare time.

The oldest of the men previously ran a related party’s company, but according to the prosecutor, he has had no income since 2018.

He himself claims in an investigation by the probation service that he began using illegal ways to earn money and maintain the standard of living to which he was accustomed.

The young man says that he sometimes sold drugs to make money.

During interrogation, he is asked what made the two men start selling drugs from the beginning:

– Good question then. I don’t know what we saw, we saw that it was possible to earn some money with it, so we started with the tests, we started with the purchase of something for ourselves and then we continued.

He must have also sold drugs

The men are also being prosecuted for violating the drug trade law, as they must have sold drugs 93 times for a total value of at least 31,000 SEK.

They are also charged with misdemeanor drug-related offenses.

Attorney Peter Pochill represents the 24-year-old. It affirms that the client has previously admitted certain circumstances.

“I’ll visit him in jail tomorrow, so we’ll see what he says then.” It’s a complete indictment, he says.

GT has sought the lawyer for the 25-year-old.
