Due to the current corona pandemic, the tribute ceremony at Edsborgs Ip is not open to the public. The soccer field usually accommodates 1,000 people, but during the ceremony only 20 are allowed in the stands, a local band with trumpet, piano and drums and some journalists and sponsors. But despite the cold weather and the few people, the atmosphere in the arena is warm and good. The Swedish flag was raised and the red carpet was unfolded from the hallway. When the ceremony begins at 11 o’clock, people also begin to gather outside the arena in the parking lot.
Bengt Olofsson, who formed the skating club in 1989, is one of the participants and welcomes Nils van der Poel with tears in his eyes and thanks him for all he has accomplished.
– I’m so proud of the boy.
– Nils is really the man on everyone’s lips. Just look at what is written on social media. He has become an inspiration to the people of Trollhätte who can feel like they are part of something bigger, Vivian Komstadius, Trollhättan city communications chief, told TTELA before the ceremony.
As part of the tribute Several Jasplanes from the F7 air flotilla will fly over the area in connection with the ceremony, TT writes.
Nils van der Poel took two World Cup golds in Heerenveen, in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters. The 24-year-old also set a new world record for the longest distance.
