The number of new cases per day now stands at just over 1,200, according to the latest figures from the Skåne Region, observed in the last 7-day period. A total of 45,214 people in Skåne have been found to be infected with the virus and pressure on healthcare is mounting. At present 346 people are cared for in hospital wards. 29 people receive intensive care.
– We will manage emergency care, we will manage covid care. But it will happen at the expense of other cares, says Alf Jönsson, regional director in Skåne during an ongoing press conference.
The infection spreads to all age groups, but most of those infected are under the age of 50.
Vaccine in progress
At the same time, the region is at the starting point to start vaccination, as soon as a vaccine is given. And now it’s a matter of weeks, according to Per Hagstam, an assistant infection control physician in Skåne.
– A vaccine will arrive in early January, but in a very limited volume then, he says during an ongoing press conference and emphasizes:
– That amount is less than what we calculated a week ago.
Older Sex First
The basic principle of the region is that those most in need of a vaccine should receive it first, which currently involves, among other things, the elderly living in special housing. The vaccine to the general public will only be available “in the spring,” according to Hagstam.
First are the priority risk groups, but initially the vaccine will not even be enough for them.
– At the beginning we do not have a vaccine so it is sufficient for all these groups. Here it should be given higher priority.
In January, the region hopes to vaccinate some 14,000 people. Prioritization will be difficult, Hagstam admits.
– So is. What we know about deliveries today will suffice for Säbo residents (especially residents, the Reds comment) and largely for those who work in Säbo. Then it won’t be enough for more in January.
