The government must introduce a second national lockdown for Italy. This is the opinion of leading health experts who say that the spread of the infection in the country is now “out of control”.

Italy was hit hard by the coronavirus in the spring and now a second wave of infection has spread throughout the Mediterranean country. By the end of last week, about 450 new deaths per day and about 30,000 new cases of infection per day were reported.

To curb the spread of the infection, a nationwide night curfew was introduced last week, as well as a deterrent to travel between regions. Tighter restrictions, including closed restaurants and bars, now prevail in several particularly affected regions.

One of these regions is Lombardy, where the city of Milan is located.

Massimo Galli, head of infection control at Milan’s Sacco Hospital, is among a growing number of experts who want to see even stricter measures, similar to those introduced in the spring.

– I’m afraid there is no longer any doubt that the situation is out of control, he tells the Rai television channel.

So far, more than 41,000 people have lost their lives in Italy and almost a million cases of the infection have been confirmed in the country.
