– There is always something special when you find a silver treasure, this treasure is also in very good condition and makes everything even more fun, says Daniel Langhammer, cultural environment officer for the county administrative board, in a statement.
The silver hoard was found late last week and the site has been investigated by archaeologists from the Gotland Museum. There are two collections of found objects. One treasure had been scattered by rabbits and the other hide was intact.
Coins and jewelry
Among other things, two Byzantine coins minted in Constantinople have been found, as well as a large number of Arab coins.
– My assessment is that the coins are from the nineties. It’s really not common for private individuals to make this kind of find, but if there is any place to find silver treasures, it is in Gotland, says archaeologist Per Widerström.
In addition to the coins, a twisted necklace was also found, as well as pieces of three silver jewels.
– Our hope is that the silver treasure can be shown in the future in the Gotland museum, says Per Widerström.
