Last season an agile newcomer who fought for the European spots.

This year, Sheffield United has once again carried a record, negative in nature.

– It will be very, very difficult to keep us, midfielder Ben Osborn tells BT Sports, according to the BBC, after 1-0 at Everton on matchday two.

In fact, they were negative record holders even before Christmas.

When Sheffield United fell 2-3 at home to Manchester United on December 17, it was the team’s twelfth loss in the opening 13 matches of the Premier League season.

With a total of one recorded point, at home against Fulham in October, it was after 13 games the worst start to the season in an English secondary division.

After a point against Brighton in the next round, Sheffield would again step on the losing track on the second day.

0-1 against Everton after a late goal from Gylfi Sigurdsson, and now you have to look down on the league system to formulate less flattering record notes.

Worst in 45 years

To find an equally bad start to an English league season like the one “The Blades” suffered this year, one has, according to the BBC, look back to the 70s, and all the way to the fourth division.

Southport and Barrow in the 1970/71 season and Newport County in 1975/76 began their respective seasons in the fourth division with two points each in 15 games.

And now Sheffield United in the 2020/2021 Premier League.

– Everyone is motivated, we couldn’t be more motivated. We are ashamed to be in this position and to break records that we do not want. We just have to get that first win, midfielder Ben Osborn tells BT Sports.

“Nothing has changed …”

Sheffield’s downfall is particularly notable when you factor in last season. In the 2019/2020 season, Sheffield, immediately after being promoted from the Championship the previous season, was one of the league’s big exclamation points that was long involved and rigged for European venues.

And basically with the same template as today.

– The same players who played with momentum and faith last year will not do so this year. Nothing has really changed, the league hasn’t really changed, Everton hasn’t really changed, but our team has. Given the lack of quality we showed this year, coach Chris Wilder tells BT Sports.

– I can’t go out and play for them. Yes, we changed tactically a bit but for me it is the same again, our lack of quality that disappoints us.

Sheffield’s next game will be against Burnley on Tuesday.
