Over the past two years, Anette Hallstrøm has ensured that almost 2 tons of garbage is collected in Limhamn. But there are people who resent it.
– It’s strange that you get angry with something so good, he says.
Anette Hallstrøm founded the Facebook group Keep Limhamn clean, which in two years has collected almost 2 tons of garbage in Limhamn.
Before Anette Hallstrøm moved to old Limhamn in 2017, she had been collecting garbage for ten years in her home country of Denmark.
– When I came here, I saw that there was a lot of garbage here too.
In May 2018, he created the Keep Limhamn clean Facebook group. On the first day of cleanup, only she and one other live in the area, she says.
– But a week later, the Facebook group had 50 members, and today we are about 550. Today we are about ten who are collecting garbage.
She believes that the reason her group is growing is that many feel powerless and want to do something to litter. During the two years of the group’s existence, they have collected 1907 kilos of rubbish in Limhamn, a result 25 times.
Trash generally consists of cigarettes, cigarette packs, candy wrappers, fast food chain containers, paper coffee cups and other beverage containers, wet wipes, plastic toothpicks, lids, and batteries. When the cleaning day is over, Anette calls the municipality who comes to collect the garbage bags.
– But you can’t just blame people. Birds also do it when looking for food in containers.
But there are also the people who bother with Keep Limhamn clean and think they do the municipality’s job, better than putting down the garbage and pressuring the municipality to toughen up, they say.
– I end up in those discussions regularly. But the municipality does not have time. The person in charge of cleaning in Limhamn has explained to me that until a few years ago they went out to clean here once a week. Today they are here twice a week and have had to hire more people.
– If we don’t help, who will? Nature is not purified.
On Saturday, September 19, World Cleanup Day is celebrated, when volunteers go out to collect garbage. Then Anette and her group will be in Sibbarp.
– We have sponsors who provide bags, gloves, vests and tongs and offer coffee, drinks, fruit and chocolate.
In addition to staying clean, Keep Limhamn clean has another purpose, adds Anette Hallstrøm.
– We also hope to be able to change the behavior of those who throw garbage where it should not be thrown.
Footnote: If you want to be part of the Sibbarp garbage collection with Keep Limhamn clean on September 19 at 9.30-13, the farmer will announce it on the Facebook page so that Anette Hallstrøm knows how much equipment and coffee are needs to.
