Last week, 2,966 new cases of covid-19 were found in the Stockholm region. The week before, the figure was 1,657.
– Both the proportion of people who are sampled and those who are infected have increased compared to the previous week, as has the number of people who are in hospital, says Elda Sparrelid, chief physician in the Stockholm Region.
Also in health there is now a clear increase in covid patients in the county. Currently, 119 established covid-19 patients are being treated in an emergency hospital or geriatric care. That’s 34 more than in the region’s latest report, which was released on October 23. 14 of them are in intensive care.
– We take this seriously and want to remind everyone of the recommendations that exist to avoid infection, says Elda Sparrelid.
Maria Rotzén Östlund, Ph.D. in infection control, says it’s unclear what’s behind the large increase, but that society has begun to see corona fatigue.
– What we know is that the infection occurs where they are close together. You can get tired of not having parties, working from home, and wanting to go out and meet people.
Although the increase is not yet great among intensive care and the deceased, it emphasizes the importance of people following the recommendations, especially since those who are now over 70 years old in a different way may be moving in society.
– We all have to tense up again and think like we think this spring.
Elda Sparrelid says that among those who test positive, many younger people, older teens, and younger adults can be seen, but there are increases in all groups.
– In connection with the increase in infection in society, the need for care also increases.
However, until now increased infection could be managed in the framework of normal health activities.
– The care is prepared and has plans to expand its service centers for covid if necessary. Right now there is nowhere where the need for care exceeds capacity, but we’ll see how it unfolds in the coming weeks, says Elda Sparrelid.
DN has previously reported on the three different scenarios for the development of covid-19 in the region, which the Public Health Agency has done: Reduce the spread of infection, uneven spread of infection with peaks and valleys and a uniform spread of the infection.
If the development in Stockholm it is within the framework of any of them – and in that case which one – is, according to Elda Sparrelid, too early to tell.
– We need someone or a few more weeks to say something about it.
Elda Sparrelid says the situation is serious and urges everyone to follow the authorities’ recommendations.
– We don’t know where this is going. It is incredibly important to follow recommendations, stay home if you are sick, and work from home whenever possible.
Some local guidelines for the region, however, it is not yet relevant, according to state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell. He mentioned the increase in Stockholm at the Public Health Agency press conference on Wednesday.
– We see a similar situation in Västra Götaland and we have a dialogue with both regions if further action is required. We really haven’t arrived yet because the situation is still pretty much under control.
