The number of reported occupational diseases has increased dramatically during the corona pandemic, new statistics from the Swedish Work Environment Authority show, writes SVT News.
An illness is counted as an occupational disease if it arises during working hours or as a result of work, for example if you become infected at your workplace. Preliminary figures show that during the first half of the year, the authority received 8,596 notifications of occupational diseases, an increase of 60 percent compared to the same period last year.
– In principle, the entire increase is related to the crown, says Ulrika Scholander, section manager of the Swedish Work Environment Authority, to SVT.
The majority of the notifications, 6,300, concern women. This is an 85 percent increase compared to last year. For men, the increase is 16 percent, to 2,296 applications. According to SVT, the big difference may be because more women work in health and care, the industries most vulnerable to the virus. 4,913 reports refer to the industry, an increase of 219 percent.
