Being exposed to sexual harassment at work can increase your risk of suicide or attempted suicide, according to a new study.
– It should be noted as a work environment problem and prioritized in work environment work, says associate professor Linda Magnusson Hanson.
Being exposed to sexual harassment in the workplace can be a bigger work environment problem than previously thought. Research has previously indicated that for people who have been exposed, the risk of stress, depression and anxiety increases to a degree that can lead to sick leave.
But according to new research from Stockholm University, the effects can be much more serious than that: it increases the risk of suicide or suicide attempts.
Duplicate risk
The study shows that the risk of suicide attempts increases by more than 50 percent among those affected and that the risk of suicide doubles. It can be harassment by managers, colleagues, patients, customers, students, or passengers.
Research also shows that it is not possible to distinguish any clear difference between men and women on the subject.
– It is already known that factors such as low demand and low social support at work are to some extent linked to suicidal behavior. But here we see a connection between these kinds of social factors, that relationships with colleagues or other people at work are important in the matter, says Linda Magnusson Hanson, associate professor in the Department of Psychology at Stockholm University, who led the study. .
Not clear yet
Unfortunately, relatively little is known about the type of work environment that contributes to the occurrence of sexual harassment, according to Magnusson Hanson, who believes more research is needed on the subject.
– However, there are many indications that the social climate and the leadership of leaders are very important, he says.
