Sewage Revealed: Increased Spread of Infection in Uppsala

– The increase that you see now in sampling and in hospitals, we could already predict several weeks ago, says Anna Székely, environmental microbiologist at EBC, the laboratory at Uppsala University where wastewater is analyzed.

The virus returned first to the south

The analysis of the wastewater has been carried out since the beginning of June in collaboration with researchers from a dozen Swedish cities and several other European countries. The analyzes showed a gradual decrease in virus particles during the summer until they could not be seen at all during the end of the summer. But in mid-September they reappeared.

– First in the water that comes from the southern part of Uppsala. The following week also from the northern part.

In the most recently analyzed measurement, there were 9,000 corona particles in one liter of wastewater at Uppsala. About the level of the summer solstice. This is lower than the first measurements in June.

I look forward to measuring at the district level

According to Anna Székely, sewage analysis can also be applied to the level where it would be possible to see what the spread of infection looks like in different parts of Uppsala.

– The Uppsala region has shown interest in this.

What is the point, when we have now started large-scale testing in the Uppsala region of people with symptoms?

– That viruses in wastewater are among the best ways to get a picture of the spread throughout a population, says Anna Székely.
