Several with fake passports arrested before Brexit

Since November, some 20 people have been arrested in Arlanda while attempting to travel to the UK on false or invalid passports. The increase is believed to be due to Brexit.

These are people from outside the EU who tried to travel before 31 December. Several of the people have stated in questioning that they plan to look for work in the UK before conditions change.

In the last week alone, eleven people have been arrested in Arlanda on suspicion of misusing a document or using a false document.

Upon arrival, people showed their genuine passports and tickets to travel to Istanbul, but after border control, they changed the queues for flights to London or Manchester. They have had tickets but have tried to pass with false or invalid passports.

“We are aware of this approach and now, before Brexit, we have been paying special attention when we fly to the UK,” says Daniel Ivansson, group manager in Arlanda’s local police area, in a press release.

Several similar cases have been discovered in the West and East police region and affected passengers in both air and ferry traffic to the UK. In the rest of Europe, there is also a growing flow of immigrants trying to reach the country before the turn of the year.
