Protesters protect themselves from tear gas from police during a demonstration in Lima on Saturday.
At least three people are said to have died when police opened fire with a shotgun at a peaceful demonstration in the Peruvian capital, Lima. Several have also been injured.
Now the country’s newly appointed president is being urged to resign.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Peru last week to express their discontent with the newly appointed interim president Manuel Merino.
On Monday, Merino succeeded popular President Martín Vizcarra, who was ousted on corruption charges, becoming Peru’s third president in four years.
But now the president of Congress urges the new president to resign, after a peaceful demonstration in Lima was met with violence by the police and three protesters were killed. A 25-year-old man died after being shot in the head with a shotgun. At least 13 people must have also been injured.
The protesters carried signs with texts such as “Merino, you are not my president” and “The deceiver Merino.”
Police also fired tear gas from helicopters to try to disperse the protesters, who threatened to march towards the congress building. The actions of the police have been criticized by the UN and Amnesty International.
