Serious spread of infection in nursing homes: users are relocated

The privately owned Kolla nursing home in Kungsbacka has a wide spread of the infection, where both residents and staff were found to be sick with Covid-19.

– Since the infection was established, we have had residents isolated in their apartments, and it can be a special challenge for people with dementia, says Gertrud Öjetoft, regional manager of Vardaga, who owns the accommodation, at a press conference.

In the municipality, there are currently 14 confirmed cases from two of the eleven homes in the municipality.

– I want to continue describing the situation as very tough and exhausting for residents and families. It’s a heavy workload for both employees and managers, says Lillemor Berglund Andreasson, head of Health and Care administration in the municipality.

“It is unfortunate”

Kungsbacka Township has now opened a short-term home where the corona-sick elderly are now relocated so they can be isolated.

Gertrud Öjetoft does not want to speculate about how the infection entered the home.

– We always track infections when we have an outbreak and have tested everyone in the business. I can’t speculate how the infection got into the business, I don’t have the skills to do it. We have him in business and it’s unfortunate, he says at the press conference.

He also does not want to comment on why Kolla is severely affected by the infection. Accommodation has been brought to the hospital.

It also says residents have had to go to hospital since the infection broke out in the accommodation.

Maria Rydberg Mo, an infection control physician in the Halland Region, says there may be a couple of reasons why the infection enters homes.

– It is not so frequent that you have entered with visitors. But it can come through visitors, staff, or the residents themselves. Some are out and have their own activities and then they can bring the infection, he says at the press conference.

Kungsbacka now has a restraining order on all the township’s nursing homes, from Thursday, December 3, to December 12.
