Serena Williams continues the pursuit of a record-setting record and her 24th Grand Slam title in US Open tennis.
However, the American came under heavy pressure from Greece’s Maria Sakkari, but was finally able to win the round of 16 with 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 after almost two and a half hours of play.
Williams trailed 0-2 in the deciding set, but the six-time US Open winner showed his strength and turned around.
– I had to fight. She did very well and was very aggressive and I knew she had to play the same way, Williams said.
The two met in the prep tournament before the US Open and then Sakkari, ranked 22nd in the world, won in a three-seater that is very reminiscent of the US Open match.
– Of course I thought about it, but only a little because at the same time this is a completely different match and a completely different scenario, said the American.
The victory was Serena Williams’ 100th at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the center court of Flushing Meadows in New York, and she is set for her 53rd Grand Slam quarterfinal.
The 38-year-old world number eight has won 23 singles grand slam titles and another would mean she touches Australia’s Margaret Court’s record of 24.
Serena Williams will face Alizé Cornet, France, or Tsvetana Pironkova, Bulgaria in the quarterfinals.
