– It is tragic in many ways because, in my view, there have been named but forgotten people who did not consider themselves worthy of anything else. This is a certain opportunity to give them redress, says Joel Nordkvist, leader of the group of moderates in the municipality of Östersund.
Over the years it has rumors It flourished among the cemetery employees that there would be a mass grave with patients from the former psychiatric hospital who died during the Spanish flu. It was in the spring that the corona pandemic was compared to the Spanish disease that the rumor of the mass grave caught the attention of politician Joel Nordkvist.
He began to dig into history and has managed to confirm through hospital obituaries that an epidemic of internal flu broke out among the nearly 600 patients in the fall of 1918, and most of those who died were buried anonymously.
And what do you think of putting them in a mass grave and not burying them in the usual way? Is there anything that says why you did that?
– I guess it was for sanitary reasons. People died on conveyor belts quite there for a while, every day 3-4 pieces could die and something needs to be done. One day I learned that 14 were buried.
– I think that, unfortunately, it was for practical and sanitation reasons.
Taking care of the mental sick at the Frösö Hospital psychiatric hospital, which has been closed for many years, has been strongly questioned recently. Now the dead in the mass grave will be restored through a memorial.
– Since we have found the names of these people, the church will erect some kind of memorial where their names and places of origin will be published so that there is some restoration for them.
