Second wave arrives in Europe: new restrictions in several countries

The covid infection is spreading rapidly in Europe and only four countries (Germany, Finland, Cyprus and Norway) are below the alert limit for the coronavirus. This means that they have fewer than 20 cases per 100,000 inhabitants on average during a seven-day period, the criteria established by the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).

The most affected on this scale are the Czech Republic with 167 cases per 100,000, the Netherlands with 140 and France with 120.

New restrictions

Several countries are trying to fight the infection by introducing new restrictions.

Italy on Wednesday introduced an obligation to wear respiratory protection outdoors. The number of new cases has increased steadily in Italy over the past two months, although the number is significantly lower than in other European countries such as France, Spain and the United Kingdom.

In Brussels, all bars, cafes and event venues must close for one month starting Thursday morning. For the moment, restaurants must remain open so that the industry does not completely collapse.

It will also be forbidden to drink alcohol in a public place in the Belgian capital.

“Among the top three”

– Every seventh person in Brussels tests positive, the virus is everywhere in the region, says Rudi Vervoort, prime minister of the Brussels region.

A spokesperson for the covid-19 crisis center in Brussels says the virus is spreading rapidly in all age groups and areas of the city.

– We are among the top three in Europe. We have fewer infections than Madrid but more than Paris, he says.

The Czech Republic breaks records

The Czech Republic sees the fastest increase in the spread of infection in Europe with 4,457 new cases in the last 24 hours. This is the first time that the Czech Republic has exceeded the 4,000 mark.

The Czech government has introduced new restrictions on public gatherings and has closed several schools. During the summer, almost all restrictions introduced this spring were eased.

But the Czech authorities still want to avoid a new closure of the company, a move that seriously damaged the economy earlier this year.

High figures in Poland and Germany

In Paris, people infected with covid occupy more than 40 percent of all places in intensive care. France registered 10,489 new cases in the last 24 hours.

The Netherlands has the highest number of infections so far in the country, about 5,000 cases in the last 24 hours. The authorities announce that there will be new restrictions if the spread of the infection continues at this high rate.

Poland reports 3,003 new cases on Wednesday, the highest daily figure in the country. Also in Germany, the spread of the infection is increasing by almost 3,000 cases in one day, the highest number since April, although it is only half compared to the highest figures this spring.
