Search work in Gjerdrum will resume in the morning.

– We will use the driveway that has been established. Then based on calculations and what we’ve gotten, the search will be extended to more of the landslide area, says Gisle Sveen, police task leader in eastern VG.

Search and rescue work ended at 5 p.m. Friday for an overnight rest. The work was deemed too dangerous to perform in the dark, as rescue personnel must be vigilant at the edge of the avalanche where further landslides may occur and thus expose personnel in the area to danger.

– No new discoveries have been made overnight. We hope the efforts made when dawn breaks will give us more information and hopefully we will discover the people who are in the landslide, Sveen tells VG early Saturday morning.

He stresses that this is still a rescue operation.

– It is with that approach that we begin the search today, he says.

Bjørn Nuland, chief of operations responsible for medical care, said on Friday that the more time passes, the lower the chances of finding survivors in the landslide. At the same time, he says the medical group at the scene still has reason to believe that there may be survivors.

– There are examples of animals rescued alive after a long time. There may be air pockets in landslides. We work to save lives until hope runs out, he tells VG.

Nine people are still missing, including two children. On New Year’s Day, a person was found dead.

Included in the search is a Swedish rescue group that specializes in locating people under collapsed buildings.

Norwegian police hold a press conference on the situation at 9 o’clock.
