Search continues after people missing in Norwegian Gjerdrum

The landslide at Ask occurred early Wednesday morning. Since then, there has been a feverish rescue effort to find people among the landslides.

A total of four people have been found dead. The first body was rescued on Friday and on Saturday three more people were found dead about 100 meters inside the search area.

– We have made a new discovery of a dead person. It’s in the same area as before, says police task leader Knut Hammer according to the Verdens Gang about the last body.

The person who died last Friday has now been identified as a 31-year-old man. According to Linkedin, he ran a company that developed websites. His partner and his dog survived unharmed, according to NRK. The other people have not yet been identified, but police assume they are on the list of the ten missing: five women, three men and two boys, including a girl born in 2018 and a 13-year-old girl. Ten people are injured, one of them seriously.

Police will continue a full search operation sometime overnight through Sunday.

Police Chief Roy Alkvist It highlights that the operation, which is in its fourth day, is still a rescue operation in the hope of finding survivors. According to the police, it is based on medical and geological assessments that air pockets can form in landslides.

– Medically, you can live for several days if you receive air. My task is to decide when there is no longer any hope of finding survivors, but we are not there now, says Ida Melbo Øystese, chief of police in the Eastern Police District at a press conference.

On Saturday, the rescue team found a live cat in the breeding area. Previously, two live dogs were found, Dagbladet says.

At the same time, it’s a battle against the clock and fast clay landslides, as in Ask, reduce the chance of air pockets.

– Sliding means a lot of liquid mass and there are large forces in motion, which means there are not as many pockets of air in that kind of sliding, says Ida Melbo Øystese.

Nine buildings have collapsed and the risk of new breeds remains high, making search and rescue difficult. According to the Norwegian Water and Power Authority (NVE), there has been a new landslide in the northeast part of the landslide area overnight on Saturday.

For the rescue effort within the area, landslide risk assessments are crucial to knowing how far they can reach the area.

– We start from images of the area and rely on the analysis of geologists. It’s hard to know how much time we’ll have before dark again. But I think conditions are almost the same as yesterday, says police task leader Roy Alkvist.

In the search job you use including chainsaws and dogs to enter and search demolished houses. Security personnel along the edges of the landslide area follow the work, which is also supported by helicopters.

Yesterday’s ground operation was carried out by specially trained Swedish personnel from the Rescue Service in Greater Gothenburg, the so-called Nusar team (national reinforcement resource for urban search and rescue), together with Norwegian dog patrols and helicopter support.

Nusar’s team went into the red zone in the landslide area by laying polystyrene tiles. The Swedish team has already left Ask.

– It has been difficult circumstances and complicated rescue work, but the cooperation with the Norwegian rescue management has worked very well, says Kent Kockum, leader of the rescue service team in Gothenburg to VG.

The residential area that has collapsed is built on fast clay. It is unclear what caused the landslide that occurred at 04:00 on Wednesday and a more in-depth analysis will be done when the acute phase ends, says Toril Hofshagen at NVE. At the same time, it emphasizes that it is not in itself a danger to live on living clay as long as it is stable and that periodic surveys are carried out in the country to detect racial risks.

– It is a unique landslide that has occurred here in Gjerdum. It is the largest rapid clay landslide that has occurred in Norway since 1893, says Toril Hofshagen.

At present, there is no indication that the new evacuations on Ask are relevant.
