Sir Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1930 and turned 90 in late August.

He was the first man to play James Bond in a movie and the role made him a legend on the big screen.

He starred in seven Bond films between 1962 and 1983.

Won an Oscar – not Gandalf

Over the years, he was praised multiple times for his acting efforts and won an Oscar and three Golden Globes.

Other Sean Connery films include 1987’s “The Indomitable,” 1989’s “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” 1990’s “The Hunt for Red October,” and 2000’s “Who’s Forrester.”

Around the turn of the millennium, he turned down the role of Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, according to the BBC.

He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2000.

Sir Sean leaves behind a son, actor Jason Connery, 57, and his wife Micheline Roquebrune, 91.

Sean Connery met his wife, a Moroccan artist, at a Moroccan golf tournament in 1975 and they remained a couple until the actor’s death.

“He was huge”

Anders Björkman, Expressen TV columnist and film critic, talks about Sean Connery’s career:

– It got huge. These early movies, especially Goldfinger and Thunderball in the 60’s. Then Bond was the greatest and there was so much power in him. He couldn’t go anywhere.

But after seven Bond movies, Sean Connery got tired and wanted to do something else.

– He turned out to be a much better actor in various roles. He did major comedies and dramatic roles. He had a great career, says Anders Björkman and continues:

– We will remember him as one of the greats of the second half of the 20th century.
