For a few hours, the United States was a banana republic, said CNN host Jake Tapper.

The whole world saw how the Capitol, the seat of the United States Congress and one of the most famous buildings in the world, was stormed by Trump supporters.

The alternate reality that Donald Trump and his right-wing media ecosystem have built culminated in all the classic attributes of the coup.

“The words may seem tiny, tiny doses of arsenic. They are swallowed without being noticed, they don’t seem to matter, but after a while the effects of the poison show.” declared the German linguist Viktor Klemperer after studying the language of the Third Reich.

Right-wing populism can win elections

In recent months, we have seen an escalation. Donald Trump has tried to invalidate the votes of states that do not support him and called the Georgia Attorney General in a phone conversation to “recalculate” and “find” 11,780 votes.

That lies and propaganda end in violence should not surprise us.

Because the scenes in Washington once again confirm an old truth.

Right-wing populists may well win democratic elections. But they rarely leave voluntarily.

Viktor Orban of Hungary was also once elected by the people. But he quickly corrupted the country’s institutions, changed the electoral law, took over the media and the courts, and now he cannot be eliminated.

Our neighboring country, Poland, is heading in the same direction.

Even Vladimir Putin of Russia and Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey were once elected in fairly democratic elections.

In recent years, parts of the right have developed in a nationalistic and authoritarian direction. Trump is a branch of the same tree as the French National Assembly, the Austrian Freedom Party and the Sweden Democrats.

For the traditional right, development has meant both problems and opportunities.

SD is competing in part for the same votes as the moderates and the Christian Democrats. But Jimmie Åkesson has also won many LO voters.

SD part of the right

Therefore, a conservative government built on M, KD and SD is within our grasp. But with what consequences?

“Those who foolishly seek power by riding on the back of the tiger, end up in its belly,” US President John F. Kennedy said in his inaugural address.

Possibly one or two Republicans in Congress recalled Kennedy’s warning when he crouched on his benches during the storm. They tried to build on the successes of Donald Trump and lost control.

The tiger fought.

In Sweden, parts of the right have spent the past 24 hours minimizing the importance of what happened.

In a later deleted tweet, Bulletin’s Ivar Arpi wrote: “But for the love of God, stop calling it a coup attempt! It is lousy anyway and of course it should be condemned, but no one, absolutely no one, can to believe that this will lead to angry 20-year-olds in soft pants taking selfies soon and taking power in America. “

At the same time, moderates are deeply offended by anyone who points out the similarities between Trump and SD. They have a certain uphill climb.

It is not only several of the top SD politicians who have consistently defended Trump. The actions of the SD people on social media are, in principle, a model for the American radical right.

They persecute and attack political opponents and journalists and spread the same misinformation and lies.

Hypocrites of M and KD

Anyone who thinks that SD would change his behavior if he gained power is extremely naive. They talk like Trump, they act like Trump, and they would try to cheat like Trump if given the chance.

Before the last election, for example, SD had a campaign to present the election as “rigged”, just as Trump has now done.

An official Facebook group was started to denounce “electoral fraud” and many accusations were sent to the electoral authority.

Both Ebba Busch and Ulf Kristersson have distanced themselves with strong words from Trump and Trump supporters. That is obviously good.

But it all gets a bit hypocritical when his intended government is based on Trump’s Swedish sister party.
